If you booked newborn photos and now you’re wondering what comes next, the answer is probably a sitter session. It’s the milestone a lot of families haven’t heard of. Not until their baby is suddenly too big for the newborn basket but not quite steady enough to stand. Sitter session photography captures that exact window, the stretch around six months when your baby can sit up on their own and personality starts taking over. It moves fast. And it deserves its own spot on the calendar, not a quick add-on tacked onto another session.

What Is a Sitter Session, Exactly?
A sitter session is a short photography appointment built around one new skill: sitting up unassisted. This is the age of milestones, sitting up, rolling over, and reaching for everything in sight. Your baby is beaming with curiosity, giggles, and expressions that deserve to be remembered. A sitter session is where we freeze all of it before the next stage takes over. We schedule these sessions around six months, right when that giggly, mischievous personality really starts to show. Every baby develops a little differently, so if yours gets there a few weeks early or late, that’s completely normal too.
We hear the same question a lot: isn’t this basically the same as newborn photos, just later? Not really. Newborn sessions are about stillness. Your baby is curled up, sleepy, brand new. A sitter session is the opposite. Baby is alert and reactive, starting to show actual personality. The gummy grin. The death grip on a toy. The look they give you right before a giggle. That personality is the whole point of the session.

Why This Milestone Deserves Its Own Appointment
Here’s the honest version. This is the milestone that gets skipped the most, usually because nobody told the family it existed. Parents book newborn photos without thinking twice. Then the next thing on their radar is the first birthday cake smash. The six-month window quietly comes and goes in between. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. There’s no redo for the exact way your baby currently belly laughs or claps.

We also think it’s one of the more fun sessions to shoot, honestly. Babies at this age have opinions. They react to the camera, to us, to the toys in the room. Some sessions are pure giggles start to finish. Others involve a baby who is deeply unimpressed with the whole process, and that’s a real photo too. We’d rather capture the actual kid in front of us than force a smile that isn’t there.

What Can You Expect at Your Sitter Session?
Expect a relaxed, studio-based session built around your baby’s actual mood that day, not a rigid shot list. We shoot sitter sessions in our downtown Indianapolis studio, using cozy, colorful sets designed specifically for this age. Not sure what to dress your baby in? Raid our client closet. We’ll also talk through poses, props, and any specific milestones you want captured, so nothing about session day feels like a guessing game. Bring along a favorite outfit or keepsake too. Those personal touches are usually what make the photos feel like your actual baby, not a generic set of poses.

Siblings and parents are welcome in the frame as well. Just let us know the group size when you book so we can plan the session around everyone comfortably.
Like every session with us, this one ends with a viewing party instead of a digital download link. You’ll come back to the studio and see your images together. Then you’ll choose the wall art or album that actually gets displayed at home, instead of buried in a phone. Sitter packages start at $300, with most families investing around $1,550 once they’ve chosen their favorites. We think that part matters just as much as the session itself. Photos you never print don’t do much for anyone.

What Comes After This Milestone
The sitter session is one stop on a longer path, not a standalone event. Our Grow With Me package is our most popular for a reason. It strings together four sessions across baby’s first year: maternity, newborn, sitter, and one year, each one custom designed. You’re not left scrambling to remember each milestone as it sneaks up on you. If you’ve already done a newborn or maternity session with us, the sitter session is simply the next chapter. And if the first birthday cake smash is still ahead of you, that milestone is waiting on the other side of this one.

You don’t have to have booked the earlier sessions to book this one, though. Plenty of families come to us for the sitter session on its own. Especially if they missed the newborn window or are just discovering us now. Either way works.
Six months goes by faster than anyone warns you about. If you want this stage on the calendar instead of just in your memory, we’d love to help. Schedule a consultation with us, and we’ll find a date that works before your baby moves on to the next milestone entirely.
